Volunteer to Become a Reading Tutor

Help local second and third graders become fluent readers by becoming a volunteer with Read Charlotte’s Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies (HELPS) program. HELPS is a scripted, evidence‐based program proven to build students’ fluency and comprehension skills. The program targets students who can sound out words but need additional help to build speed and accuracy (fluency) while reading.

Tutoring sessions last 15‐20 minutes, and volunteers can serve three students over the course of 45‐60 minutes. Corporate volunteers can also team up with another employee to form a team that covers the weekly shifts in rotation.

One 3.5 hour training is required before volunteering. Learn more about the program, and get started at www.readcharlotte.org/HELPS.
